How KW load is calcualted ? What is the formula ?

The Load for a house or a shop is calculated by adding the ratings ( Watt or Wattage ) of all electrical devices in home. Like if you have 2 bulbs with rating 60 W , and a fan with rating 75 W , and a AC with rating 1500 W . The total load of your house is = ( 60 x 2 ) + 75 + 1500 = 1695 Watt . And if we convert it to KW ( KiloWatt , Kilo = 1000 means 1000 W ) . Then the load will be = 1695 / 1000 = 1.695 KW . Load for house shops is usualy denoted in KW . But for industries and agriculture it is denoted in HP ( i.e. horse power 1 HP = 746 W = 0.746 KW ) You can also reduce your monthly electricity bills with better planning. Plus, it helps you pick the right solar system, inverter, and battery for your home.

What is KW , KWH & HP ?

(1) kW (Kilowatt) 👉 It shows power — how much electricity your appliances need at a moment.

Example: An AC of 1.5 kW means it uses 1.5 kW while running.

(2) kWh (Kilowatt-hour) 👉 It shows energy consumption — how much electricity you use over time.

Example: Running a 1 kW appliance for 1 hour = 1 kWh (this is what your bill is based on).

(3) HP (Horsepower) 👉 It’s another unit of power, mostly used for motors and pumps.

👉 1 HP ≈ 0.75 kW

(4) 💡 In short:

kW = power now | kWh = total usage over time | HP = motor power unit

What is KW rating of electric appliances ? How does it affect electricity bill ?

The kW rating of an appliance shows how much power it uses while running. Higher kW means the appliance consumes more electricity. If you use high kW appliances for longer time, your electricity bill increases. For example, a 1 kW heater running for 2 hours uses 2 units (kWh), which adds to your bill.

Why Knowing & understanding electrical load is important ?

Do you know that the Load is the first thing that is required when you want an electric conenction . As this is required for the New connection charges and also the monthly electric bill charges are also depend on it . Moreover it helps in deciding how many appliances are you using . And thus it determine the load for whole area tha helps the electricity providing company to install a DP ( trnasformer ) with proper capacity . Because in case of overload you may receive low voltage . That can impact your household devices and may even damage them . Also using more KW Load than what we have opted may cause penalties , when you caught like more pumps motor without increasing loads . So using optimum load is good for house , house hold applainecs , and company also.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this electricity load calculator?

This calculator provides a close real-world estimate based on standard appliance wattages. Actual consumption may vary depending on appliance efficiency and usage habits.

What is sanctioned load and why is it important?

Sanctioned load is the maximum power approved by your electricity provider. Exceeding it can lead to penalties, frequent tripping, or forced load upgrades.

What happens if my home’s kW load exceeds the sanctioned limit?

You may face power tripping, penalties, or need to upgrade your sanctioned load from the electricity provider.

How many kW load is typically required for a 1 BHK home in Indore?

A 1 BHK home in Indore usually needs around 1–2 kW, depending on appliances like AC, fridge, and geyser.

How do I calculate my total home load in kW using this calculator?

Simply add your appliances, enter their quantity, and the calculator will automatically show your total load in kW.

Does higher load means high electricity bill?

Yes. In commercials ( shops , offices ) and industrial cases the load directly increases fized chargesw. But in Domestic tariff category it does not affect the bill charges , As in domestic category the bill charges fully depends on unit KWH consumer.

Why do recommendations change when I add appliances?

Recommendations update dynamically to ensure your system remains efficient, safe, and cost-effective as your electricity demand changes.
